Dr. Manda is a Licensed Pastoral Counselor in the State of Kentucky. He holds a Ph.D. in Pastoral Family Therapy from the University of Pretoria and a Master's degree in Clinical Pastoral Care and Counseling from the University of Stellenbosch.
He is the Owner and Clinician at Dr Manda Therapy in Kentucky. It provides pastoral counseling and psychotherapy services. As a field of practice, Pastoral Counseling is an approach to mental health care that draws its wisdom from psychology and the behavioral health sciences alongside spirituality. Studies show that spiritual well-being has a significant impact on key health measures. It reduces despair, anxiety, depression, the wish to die, and improves the quality of life. That is why Dr Manda uses pastoral counseling and psychotherapy approaches to help clients overcome life's challenges and live happier and healthier lives.
Dr Manda is the author of the prestigious book: Re-authoring Life Narratives After Trauma: A Holistic Narrative Model of Care. The book is an interdisciplinary, specialist resource for traumatic stress researchers, practitioners and frontline workers who focus their research and work on healing communities from diverse religious backgrounds that are confronted with trauma, death, illness and other existential crises.
Manda is currently developing the Holistic Narrative Model of Care which integrates spiritual resources into the psychotherapeutic practice. The model guides a therapist how to conduct a holistic assessment and treatment of those clients who want their spiritual needs to be addressed in therapy. He presented his preliminary theory at the Kentucky Counseling Association's 66th Annual Conference in Louisville, Kentucky in November 2023.
Dr Manda is a seasoned facilitator with over 16 years of experience in facilitating healing workshops with small and large groups in South Africa, Namibia, Israel, Luxembourg, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom, Colombia, South Korea, and the United States. In the USA alone, he has co-facilitated the Healing of Memories workshops or meetings in Arizona, Minnesota, California, New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maine, Washington State, Oregon, Washington DC, Tennessee, and Hawaii. Thus, Manda has listened to hundreds of stories. It's no surprise that compassionate and active listening top the list of his skills.
Dr Manda is a Healthcare Chaplain at the University of Kentucky Medical Center (UKHC). He completed his first year residency at Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut, USA. He provided clinical pastoral counseling to patients, families, and staff from September 2019 to January 2021. He oversaw the Adult Psychiatric Unit where he participated in Ward Rounds, counseled psychiatric patients, and facilitated Spirituality Groups.
Prior to Residency, Manda completed three internships in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) in South Africa at Tygerberg Academic Hospital and Stikland Psychiatric Hospital in Cape Town. These internships were a part of the Master's degree in Clinical Pastoral Care and Counseling at the University of Stellenbosch.
One day a Social Worker booked therapy sessions with him saying that she observed that chaplains are non-judgmental listeners.
